Up from ashes… Sarina will be discussing our But Up from ashes… Sarina will be discussing our Butterfly House project next Thursday for the 2024 AIA East Bay Lecture Series. Working with the owner, a retired music teacher and hot air balloon pilot, Sarina and team rebuilt her home of 47 years burned in the 2017 Nuns Canyon wildfire. Space First! Our design for the lobby of 555 Bryan Space First! Our design for the lobby of 555 Bryant is an essay on subtraction: we carved open this high-rise building design to reveal latent opportunities for light, landscape and multi-use space. The first move creates a courtyard, then a double-height volume visually links it to the street. A steel bridge spans between the remaining floor plates. Less floor area proves to be better floor area as lounges, co working, fitness, retail and leasing spaces find their optimized places throughout. Thank you to @jkingsfchron and the @sfchronicle fo Thank you to @jkingsfchron and the @sfchronicle for the fascinating article last Friday that featured our Bill Sorro Community project. King’s thesis echoes a quote by Louis Sullivan: “Our architecture reflects truly as a mirror”. As such, the acute need for affordable housing in the Bay Area and the noble efforts to meet it loom large in our collective consciousness. We are deeply honored that Bill Sorro Community was cited as an “assertive triumph” and “a humane vote of confidence that things will get better”. But architecture is the tip of the iceberg: “It’s the presence of determined non-profit developers who work hard to cobble together funds to make apartments for low income residents”. This includes the indefatigable @mercyhousing who developed Bill Sorro Community and were inspired partners throughout.
