Private Residence Boonville Road

Ukiah, CA

A poorly conceived 1970s ranch house gains new life with a kitchen and living room addition opening onto a large covered porch. Threaded between two mature oak trees, the new porch overlooks orchards and shelters the house from the western sun. Raw steel trusses, floor-to-ceiling glass, and exposed timber framing convey a rustic-modern sensibility. Shots of direct sunlight accent the shaded interior living space and choreograph the flow of space.

Homes in Ürgüp built in 18th and 19th centuries with a hybrid approach that cuts caverns into volcanic tuff and uses the spoils as a quarry for additive structures above and beside. Many, like the elegant Esbelli Evi (shown), have been converted into inns or hotels. Last image shows an active remodel site.

Unfolding geometries: 1,500 years collapses into t Unfolding geometries:
1,500 years collapses into the pure experience of space as one teleports back into the minds of its creators. All the decisions about procession, proportion, alignment, light, structure and material laid out like a text to be decoded. And it only matters because it is so breathtakingly beautiful.
